Variety of the Yorkie Coat

Within the Yorkshire Terrier breed there are a variety of coat colorings and markings. Below we will explain the ones you will find in our program. Please note each picture below is of a puppy from Donna’s Kountry Kennels sent to us from their forever home.

Traditional:

Black and tan are the two distinct colors in the “traditional” coat. You will often hear traditional yorkies referred to as black and tan as well. In this traditional coloring you can sometimes find some white on their face, chest, and feet. Often times this black saddle fades to a beautiful silver with age. While the younger black back will not return the silver back is typical of the yorkie adult coat.

Parti Yorkie:

Parti Yorkies are pure breed Yorkshire Terrier with a tri-coat gene. The parti yorkie coloring consists of a combination of white, black, tan, and “blue” (grey/silver). Although these colors are typical in the traditional coat coloring the large amount of white is what makes this coat unique.

Chocolate Yorkie:

A chocolate yorkie is a pure breed Yorkshire Terrier that has an entirely brown coat. The brown can vary from a dark tan to reddish brown. Chocolate Yorkies are also referred to as “liver”, or “red”. They also have a precious brown nose!

Sable / Golden Yorkie:

The sable or yorkie is a very rare coat coloring. They are born with a golden or blonde coat and often have some white markings on their face, feet, and chest.

Hopefully this helps clear up any confusion that you may have had about the variety of coat colorings you can find within the Yorkshire Terrier breed.
